I think this totally depends on your expectations concerning facilities and lifestyle. In Thailand you can live on 200 Baht per day but you can also spend 2000 or more if you want to stay at more luxurious places and eat in expensive ac restaurants and bars. Alcohol is quite expensive. If you eat Pad Thai (fried noodles)or Khao Pad (fried rice) at the small places on the street this will not be more than 30-50 Baht on the mainland, on the islands they will charge you a little more. The northern and northeastern parts are cheaper than the central and south.

I got an education visa for 1 year, because I am in a language school. This was very easy. As a tourist you may apply for a 3 month visa at the embassy. If you can show them your return ticket maybe even 4 - but I am not sure...

bei der thailändischen botschaft natürlich. in berlin waren sie allerdings ziemlich unfreundlich und meinten ich könnte kein visum für ein jahr bekommen. dann war ich beim konsulat in essen. dort waren die leute total nett und es war überhaupt kein problem. ich kann also nur empfeheln zu einem kleineren konsulat und nicht zu thai-botschaft in berlin zu gehen.

I've herad of La Villa. Somebody recommended it as a really good and original Italian restaurant. It's in 131 Sukhumvit Soi 53. But I think it is stylish as well and also a little bit more expensive, I think around 500 baht for a Pizza (did not yet manage to go there myself). Another one is Duilio's Italian restaurant in 17 Sukhumvit Soi 49. (I cannot recommend Pizza Company, we got stomacache twice from their food and it's not the taste of a real pizza.) What about Israelian food? I like the food in the first! of 2 Israelian restaurants in the the small Soi next to the Chana Songkhram Police Station next to Khao San Rd. If you come from Khao San Rd. to the Police Station it is the next Soi to the right. Bon appetit!

Welche Museen in Bangkok sind sehenswert?

Wenn du schon einige Museen in Bangkok besucht hast, kennst du sicherlich das Nationalmuseum neben der Thammasat Universität, gegenüber des Sanam Luang? Viele Tempel haben auch eigene kleine Museen, in denen man die abstrusesten Ansammlungen alter Gegenstände findet. Ich stehe auf diese eher unorganisierten Sammlungen zeitgeschichtlicher Utensilien, da sie mich für einen Moment in eine andere Zeit versetzen können. Sehr empfehlenswert finde ich daher auch das wenig bekannte, individualistische Labour Museum, ganz in der Nähe der Makkasan Railway Station, in der Nikhom Makkasan Rd. Das ganze liegt in der Gegend des Bayoke Tower, Bangkoks höchstem Gebäude. Unter Umständen trifft man bei einem Besuch des Labour Museums auch gerade auf eine Bandprobe der "Voices of Workers". Die Leute hier sind sehr sympathisch.

Thailand - with its Khao San Road in Bangkok - is probably the travellers' melting pot in Southeast Asia. From here people are straying to Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Birma and even to China, Tibet and elsewhere. The airport (Suvarnabhum) is strongly frequented by all international airlines. In Many cases it is much cheaper to go there than flying directly to Laos or any other surrounding country. Another point is that Thailand is very easy to travel. Good infrastructure to travel through the whole country, little harassment, begging and "hawking" - even easy for women to travel alone here.

Wie komme ich vom Flughafen BKK am besten in die Stadt?

Es gibt einen Bus, der regelmässig vom Flughafen fährt - kostet soweit ich mich erinnere ca. 12 Baht. Etwas bequemer und teurer ist es wahrscheinlich mit dem Taxi, dabei ist es wichtig in die unterste Etage vom Suvarnabhumi Airport zu gehen und dort ein normales Taxi mit TAXIMETER! zu nehmen und sich nicht von den total überteuerten Unternehmen eine Etage darüber catchen zu lassen! Die verlangen nämlich locker 3000 Baht oder sogar mehr! Mit Taximeter kostet es ca. 200-250 Baht (je nach Verkehrslage) + 65 Baht Autobahngebühr. Die Skytrain vom Flughafen bis in die Stadt braucht wohl noch ein paar Jahre bis zu ihrer Fertigstellung :-( !

language course

You will probably find the best language schools in Bangkok. The one which is best known is the Union Language School, but there are other schools using the same system such as AAA Thai Language school and Unity Thai language school. An other well known one ist AUA in Bangkok. I went to AAA for severeal months and I can recommend it, they are taking their task seriously although not ALL the teacheres there are really good. I also know that there is a language programme at Chulalongkorn University, but this is supposed to be three times the price you pay at the above named schools. I think this programme at Chula Univ. is quite good if you want to deal with Thai literature. For just being able to converse the others are probably more useful. But sorry, I don't know any language schools at the beach!

Flea Market

Particularly nice are the fleamarkets at the Mauerpark in Berlin Mitte and Boxhagenerplatz in Friedrichshain – these are really extraordinary and still quite cheap, always a good snip available and lots of entertainment and nostalgic stuff. Cheap bikes in good condition, handbags, skates, whatever....! The market at Boxhagenerplatz (“Boxi”) is well manageable and nice, a special attraction is the 135 year old Yogi with a ruminant music show and it may happen that you’ll come to see bands like the “Ohrboten” live. Another one is in Strasse des 17. Juni – I’ve not been there for a while – but I remember nice pairs of 2. hand shoes!

koh tao

Sehr schön ist die Ostseite von Koh Tao, allerdings gibt es dort keinen Sandstrand, sondern Klippen und kleine Buchten. Teilweise nur mit dem Boot oder auch mit einem Geländewagen zu erreichen. Ich war im View Rock Resort in der Ao Hin Wong Bucht, fand es super schön dort und habe nur 100 Baht die Nacht für einen Bambusbungalow ohne Bad bezahlt und echt nette Leute dort getroffen. Ist allerdings schon einige Ziet her und ich weiss nicht, ob es sich vielleicht verändert hat, denn das geht dort ziemlich schnell. In Had Sairee gibt es einen langen Sandstrand, das ist sozusagen das Zentrum von Koh Tao und dort ist wesentlich mehr los, ich fand es zum Wohnen dort nicht so wirklich attraktiv. Ansonsten hab ich gehört von Tao Tong Villa, ein Guesthouse im Südwesten der insel. Auch eher ein ruhiges etwas abgelegenes Plätzchen, aber nicht ganz so weit vom "Zentrum" und dem belebteren Chalok Baan Kao strand entfernt. Das Schöne an dieser Insel ist, dass man es halten kann wie man will - es gibt die sehr belebte Ecke von Had Sairee sowie Mae Haad und Chalok Baan, wo man auch ein wenig (oder mehr) Nachtleben findet, aber auch sehr abgelegene ruhige Orte wie vor allem Ao Thain Og, Ao Leuk, Ao Hin Wong u.a. Wenn man dort einen Tauchkurs machen will, es aber trotzdem gerne ruhiger hätte und nicht am Had Saireewohnen will, bietet sich Ao Tanote an! Rund um die Insel gibt es wunderbare Schnorchelplätze!

Wo finde ich in Bangkok Unterkünfte für einen Monat oder länger?

In Bangkok gibt es jede Menge Condominiums. Das sind diese großen Wohnhäuser oder Blocks. Diese haben immer ein Büro unten drin, wo man einfach nachfragen kann, ob etwas frei ist, wieviel es kostet und meistens kann man sich die Wohnungen und Zimmer auch direkt ansehen. Es gibt sehr viele voll möblierte Sachen zu mieten, die Preise sind je nach Wohnlage total unterschiedlich. Leider kann es bei der Verständigung oft zu Problemen kommen. Und bei einem Aufenthalt von einem Monat könnte es vielleicht auch schwierig werden etwas zu finden. Ein Haus, das ich empfehlen kann, ist das Ratchaprarop Mansion in der Rachaprarop Strasse. Das ist die Gegend Nähe Vistory Monument. Dort bekommst du auf jeden Fall auch etwas für einen Monat und die Leute sprechen gut Englisch. Es gibt einen Pool!, Fernseher und Internet auf dem Zimmer, Kosten ab ca. 6000 Baht im Monat. Tel. (0066)(0)2-245 -3355 oder (o)2-245-5404. In der Ecke gibt es dann auch noch einige andere Häuser wo du nachfragen kannst, falls dir das Haus nicht zusagen sollte. Z.B. Phayathai Apartments: (0066)(0)2-245-2299

Guesthäuser, Travellerunterkünfte oder Schlafgelegenheiten ausserhalb der Khao San Road in Bangkok

Soi Kasemsan, gegenüber vom MBK beim Siam Square kann ich empfehlen, dort gibt es mehrere Guesthäuser, die Strasse ist recht ruhig. Dort ist es etwas teurer als in der Khao San, aber es lohnt sich. Ansonsten gibt es auch ein paar sehr nette Häuser direkt bei der Nationalbibliothek, Sri Ayutthaya Road (noch hinter der Kreuzung Sri Ayutthaya und Samsen Road).

Was muss ich und sollte ich in Thailand gesehen haben?

Nordthailand. Für mich ist Nordthailand mit Chiang Mai als grösster Stadt und noch weiter nördlich dann mit Bergen, Wasserfällen, Regenwald, kleine (Berg-)Dörfer bis hin zum Goldenen Dreieck immernoch der interessanteste Teil Thailands, auch wenn es im Süden ebenso einiges zu sehen und zu erleben gibt und die Inseln sich teilweise natürlich hervorragend zur Entspannung eignen.

Should I agree to a teaching job in Thailand before I'm there or wait and find one when I get there?

Hi Annab! With a degree in English it is very easy to find a teaching job for English in Thailand, especially in Bangkok because here are the most (international and private) schools. But also outside of Bangkok there are some jobs for teaching English, maybe a little bit more difficult to find. Are you a native speaker? This is always a big advantage! - But a degree in English is fine anyway. The most common method in Thailand is to just go there (the school you would like to work at), talk to the people and fill in an application form. If they like you, they will take you. But also from abroad you should be able to find something (via internet), the advantage would be that you can clear up all the administrative stuff in advance, like work-permit and business-visa. Either from there or here check the job classifieds at Bangkok Post Link and The Nation ink Already in Thailand you can better check the paper version! There are many searches for English-teachers every day. Also check: Teacher Homepage in Thailand here you can also find jobs outside of Bangkok. das mit der abflughalle funktioniert in der regel aber nicht immer, manchmal wollen sie einfach nicht mit taximeter fahren. letztens sind wir dann eine runde auf der autobahn und wieder zurück zum flughafen gefahren, weil der typ sich nicht aufs taximeter einlassen wollte um dann ins nächste taxi umzusteigen, das uns ganz normal mit taximeter weggebracht hat. der taximeterstand wurde von ganz unten direkt auf die etage der ankunftshalle verlegt. dort muss man sich anmelden und wird auf jeden fall mit taximeter + 50 baht flughafengebühr * ca. 65 baht autobahngebühr gefahren. der bus vom flughafen zur khao san kostet auf jeden fall mehr als 12 baht, sorry. so um die 120 dachte ich, weiss es aber nicht genau.

ich glaube du meinst die sog. JA DONG!? das sind verschiedene kräuter-, wurzel und hölzermischungen, die mit alkohol gemischt medizinische wirkung haben sollen z.b. gegen rückenschmerzen, schlaflosigkeit, müdigkeit oder potenzprobleme. in thailand bekommt man sie auf verschiedenen märkten oder in läden, die auch andere cremes, salben, pülverchen, kräuter und massageutensilien verkaufen. in deutschland weiss ich allerdings nicht wo man so etwas bekommt, wahrscheinlich musst du es selbst zusammenstellen aus den einzelnen bestandteilen oder schau mal im internet nach!

What about Khao San???

Since I am living and working in Bangkok quite a long time now, I thought about that question, too and still ending up Khao San from time to time. To me it seems like around Khao San I can throw away all conventions, drink beer and smoke cigarettes (as a female)on the street without beeing looked at like the dregs of society. Surely this is not only in Khao San road but every other nightlife place, too. Another reason for people to end up there is probably that - as a tourist - you sometimes don't know any other places that provides a scene to hang around comfortably in Bangkok... and you are right - there have been times I hated that place too. ;)
